Cadillac Ranch – Amarillo, TX

Ten Vintage Cadillacs buried nose deep in the middle of a field… What’s up with this bizarre pitstop of the Panhandle? Cadillac Ranch is an iconic roadside art installation created in 1974 by Stanley Marsh and the artist’s collective, Ant Farm. It stands along Historic Route 66, just outside of Amarillo, Texas.

Lowered (or driven!) into the ground, the cars were chosen by year to demonstrate the evolution of Cadillac’s tail fin: ’49, ’52, ’54, ’56, ’57, ’58, ’59, ’60, ’62 & ’64. The models were acquired from junkyards or donated, and placed at the same angle as the Great Pyramid of Giza. The installation is said to represent “The Golden Age” of the American automobile.

Make your mark! Bring a can of spray paint – graffiti is encouraged! The eccentric Stanley Marsh was a bit of a rebel himself, and when miscreants started defacing the sculpture, he welcomed the evolution of his art. He was quoted as saying, “We think it looks better ever year,” and the gate has been left open 24/7 for visitors. Over the years, the cars have grown a tough “skin” – layers upon layers of signatures, symbols and messages from wayward travelers.

Location: 12 miles west of Amarillo off I-40, between exits 60 & 62. On the north frontage road.
Free & open to the public.

The VW Slug Bug Ranch – Conway, TX

A nearby tribute, The VW Slug Bug Ranch, stands 35 minutes east of Cadillac Ranch in Conway, TX. This detour is also worth the stop if you’re in to quirky constructions.

You’ll pass by other classic “Americana” scenes, including hay fields, leaning water towers, giant crosses, and some of the COOLEST abandoned gas stations I’ve ever seen.
